A Ugandan man suffering from onchocerciasis shows the inflammation and dipigmentation the condition is causing on his back. Itching from onchocerciasis can be severe and debilitating in heavily infected persons.

The World Health Organization's expert committee on onchocerciasis estimates that approximately 50 million people are at risk of contracting the disease.
