A young boy in Uganda with schistosomiasis, a disease that seriously weakens its victims and, in some cases, impairs the function of organs such as the spleen and kidneys.

Also known as bilharzia (bill-HAR-zi-a), schistosomiasis is caused by parasitic worms and is considered second only to malaria as the most devastating parasitic disease in tropical countries.
